　　　　1948年，凭借智利共产党支持而上台的智利总统加夫列尔·冈萨雷斯·魏地拉与共同执政的共产党人不和，进而宣布共产党非法并展开大规模的逮捕和迫害行动。诗人与参议员巴勃罗·聂鲁达公开撰文讽刺冈萨雷斯·魏地拉总统，并置自己于危险之中，不得不在国内辗转避难，最终于1949年成功逃往墨西哥。 　　帕布罗·拉雷恩的这部独特的传记电影聚焦这段历史，巧妙地将史实与虚拟情节混合在一起。电影中，聂鲁达被一位叫做奥斯卡·佩鲁乔诺的警探追捕，后者誓要将诗人捉拿归案，他的叙述以画外音的形式贯穿全片。
