　　范妮（贝蒂·戴维斯饰）是纽约上流社会的万人迷，她如花美眷，顾盼生姿，男人见了她都要拜倒在她的石榴裙下，不料其弟在工作中弄虚作假，欠下老板史格芬顿先生（克劳德·雷恩斯饰）一笔巨款，为还款，范妮嫁给了一直暗恋自己的史格芬顿先生，谁知弟弟竟然勃然大怒，离家出走，投身到了第一次世界大战之中。几年后，接到弟弟战死通知的范妮痛彻心扉，将这场不幸的原因赖到史格芬顿先生身上，二人的关系由此开始出现裂痕。
