　　希尔克曾拥有平静而幸福的人生。他是一位优秀的教授，长年的辛勤工作使他得到了同事的尊敬，学生的爱戴。家庭亦无可挑剔，深深相爱的妻子也是老师，他们育有三个孩子，事业都很成功 ，其中两个像他们一样拿起了教鞭。生活对于希尔克似乎美好得令人嫉妒。但在和谐之下，他隐瞒着一个秘密。他实际上是一位非裔美国人，只是因为肤色很浅所以谎称自己是犹太人——甚至连妻子也不知道。多年来他竭力通过努力来证明自己可以在白人世界立足。

　　具有讽刺意味的是，希尔克一次在课堂上无心地误用了带种族歧视倾向的词，他遭到来自四面八方的指责。在所谓“政治正确”的原则下，希尔克成了可怜的牺牲品。这件事引发了一场地震，突然令他的生活土崩瓦解，从云端直坠地狱。几乎是一夜之间，他失去了一切。被大学解雇，朋友纷纷躲开，最后连妻子竟然也离他而去，儿女们甚至不愿意和他说话。他变得一无所有。

　　这时候他遇到了佛妮娅，他们很快便陷入了疯狂的热恋中，这似乎让希尔克找到了继续生活下去的动力。佛妮娅是他的避难所，也是他的自我在另一个世界中的映射。或许希尔克爱她的原因就是他们两人都承载着同样的心理重负。佛妮娅是白人，却极其自卑，对她的过去与现在充满羞耻感。她的回忆充满痛苦：童年在继父的虐待中渡过，前夫患有精神病，他们的孩子也不幸死去。备受折磨的她格外脆弱，不敢轻易相信任何人。

　　于是两个孤独的人各怀秘密地相互寻找慰藉，用激情来填补内心的寂寞，抚平伤口。但是，注定悲剧还要继续上演……
