400多年前，日本对朝鲜发动了史称"壬辰倭乱"的侵略战争，在抗倭名将李舜臣的带领下，朝军利用鸣梁海峡特殊的地理特征以12艘板屋船击退日军战船130余艘，成为海战史上以少胜多的著名战役，史称"鸣梁大捷"。
1597年3月，日本小西行长、加藤清正率领十四万陆军、万余海军以及战船数百艘，以及以野蛮凶狠著称的海贼王（柳承龙饰演）所率领的海盗部队，再次大举侵朝。7月15日，日军突袭漆川岛朝鲜水军驻地，朝军毫无准备，遭到惨败。朝鲜王迫于形势，不得不顺应民心，重新任命一代名将李舜臣（崔岷植饰演）为三道水军统制使。而此时，当年扬威海上的威武水师，现在只剩下可怜的12艘军舰。
李舜臣到任后，在全罗道右水营着手重建海军。然而所率众将对敌我形势极度悲观，纷纷表现出"此战必败"的情绪。李舜臣力排众议，命人焚毁军队辎重给养仓库，破釜沉舟，以"勇者生，畏者死"的气概，号召部下与倭寇决一死战。
在鸣梁和珍岛碧波亭之间，有一水流湍急的海峡。李舜臣趁退潮时派人设置了铁索与木桩。9月16日，海贼王率领330余艘战船和2万陆军从兰浦出发，准备趁涨潮时进入鸣梁海峡，向朝鲜水军发起攻击。
大战当前，李舜臣身先士卒，亲率旗舰战船孤军迎战，引诱敌人驶入鸣梁海峡。一场恶战，击沉敌人指挥船和其它战船两艘。海贼王被杀，阵形大乱。这时已开始退潮，海水湍湍东流，朝鲜战船趁势猛攻，敌船招架不住，顺流东撤，但被铁索和木桩挡住去路。朝鲜战船抓住有利战机，奋力冲杀，击沉敌船30余艘，毙敌4000余人，重创了日本舰队，创造了世界海战史上一次以少胜多的著名战役。

.影片在韩国动员1700万观影人次，赶超《阿凡达》刷新了韩国历年观影人次纪录。
.为了真正了解书写《乱中日记》时李舜臣将军的所思所想，金汉珉导演对多个译本进行了比较。
.因《乱中日记》和《李忠武公全书》《宣祖实录》等史料记录相异，在缺乏确切历史数据的情况下，为了真实再现这场战争，导演和相关专家对鸣梁地区的洋流、当时的天气、地形都进行了大量调查研究。
.影片《鸣梁海战》制作耗资200亿韩元（约1.2亿人民币）。
.为了逼真呈现这场海战，剧组在全罗道光阳建造了超大型海战摄影棚，依据历史记录搭建了4艘1:1的大船，特别是一些日本战船的搭建还接受了日本名古屋海洋博物馆的建议。并在鸣梁岸边搭建了村落。
.日本兵的盔甲都是日本定制并购得的，仅柳承龙饰演的来岛通总一身铠甲就花费了2800万韩币（大约15万人民币），重量超过30公斤。此外搞了近1000件形状各异的日本服装。
.因为资金和拍摄周期的问题放弃了3D拍摄，在续集《闲山岛海战》和《露梁海战》中准备尝试3D拍摄，
.影片上映的2014年发生了因船长失职和政府救援不当而引发的致数百名中学生惨死的岁月号沉船事件，而沉船地点就离片场不远，可谓一个令人唏嘘的偶然。
.该片是崔岷植2002年主演《醉画仙》之后10年来再度出演历史题材影片。
