　　二对母女，罗拉（拉娜·特纳饰）与女儿苏西（胡安妮塔·摩儿饰）之间因母亲专注于事业，而与女儿缺乏沟通，导致两母女同时爱一个男人的悲剧；她们在海边遇到的另一对黑人母女，黑人母亲安妮（丹·奥赫里奇饰），因为混血女儿始终不肯承认自己是黑人的事实，而悲伤矛盾，但是安妮这个善良的女人始终等待其女儿的回头，只是子欲养而亲不待。

　　本片讲述两个具有现代意识的悲剧。本片是一部社会性的写实片，突出了黑人与白人之间的种族歧视与子女教育问题，可以说是一部套路偏中国文戏的文艺片。尽管有煽情的成分，但比一般的家庭片更深刻。1934年曾拍过一次。
